Our Story

Over fifty years ago, an Indonesian immigrant woman opened a small kueh shop in Macau, beginning a three-generation legacy of culinary heritage.

During the mid-20th century anti-Chinese movements in Indonesia, waves of ethnic Chinese were forced to leave their homes. Ms. Li Zhui Zhi fled to Macau as a refugee, carrying the memory and craft of traditional Indonesian cuisine. She founded Medan Indonesian Restaurant on Rua do Padre António, serving authentic Indonesian food to fellow immigrants and local residents.

As word of mouth spread and customers grew, Medan relocated to a larger space on Avenida de Horta e Costa.

Second Generation
2013

Second Generation

Founder Ms. Li's two nephews, Mr. Li Zhi Qin and Mr. Li Zhi Qian, took over operations, continuing Medan's traditional flavors.

Third Generation
2014

Third Generation

Third-generation Mr. So Ka Tou took the helm, establishing a dedicated factory at Kat Seng Industrial Building to scale production while preserving classic recipes, expanding to 4 stores across Macau.

Indonesian Immigrant Culture in Macau

Medan's story is a microcosm of Macau's Indonesian immigrant heritage. During the mid-20th century anti-Chinese movements in Indonesia, many ethnic Chinese fled to Macau as refugees, bringing with them a rich Indonesian food culture. Medan is a living testament to this history — each kueh carries the traditional methods of the Indonesian archipelago and the memory of Southeast Asian spices, rooted and passed down through generations in this land where East meets West.

Our Philosophy

For over four decades, Medan has remained dedicated to crafting Indonesian food products, following original production methods and ingredients. Third-generation leader Mr. So Ka Tou continues to champion the art of handcrafted Indonesian kueh. Every piece is made by hand — no shortcuts, only an unwavering commitment to quality.
